IPC-J-STD-001GS Space Certified for Soldered Electrical & Electronic Assemblies
The IPC J-STD-001 is the pre-eminent authority for electronics assembly manufacturing. An addition has been issued by the IPC called Space Addendum (IPC J-STD-001GS).
The IPC is a non-profit organisation with a mission to provide industry standards, training and industry intelligence on a global scale. The electronics applications in the space sector are considered significantly different from the standard electronics used, which prompted the development of the addendum.
The Space Addendum (IPC J-STD-001GS) has been developed by personnel from NASA, ensuring significant professional knowledge has been incorporated. During the Space Addendum training, professional knowledge is conveyed about the specific requirements with regard to electronics for space applications. This includes how assemblies survive the vibration and thermal cyclic environments of getting to and operating in space.
Scott Begbie, APC Technology’s managing director commented on the recent training investment. “South Australia is home to the Australian Space Agency and with over 80 space-related organisations, the state is the undisputed national centre of the Australian space industry. We are actively looking to partner and support the sector. Building on our capability is critical and gaining globally recognised qualifications which are specific to space will help us win business.”
“We now have a team who understand the method and acceptance criteria for producing soldered electronical and electronic assemblies for the space sector,” commented Keith McDougle, head of manufacturing at APC. “We are in a stronger position to support companies looking for manufacturing facilities and to take on space related contracts.”
The APC staff who attended the training were required to complete IPC J-STD-001 prior to completing the Space addendum.
APC Technology completed their training through Chemtools Australia. Chemtools are an Official Australian Licenced IPC Training Centre and have been conducting IPC Training across Australia since 2007. Their fully equipped training centre includes Hot Air Rework Systems, Preheaters, Infrared Rework Systems, Induction Heating Soldering Irons, and Microscopes, among other tools. https://ipctraining.com.au/
